Episode 45: To Say My Last Good Bye


 

April 8, 1946: Sweetie writes to Chester Demaree, M.D. and Laura, documenting her shock at the news that her older brother, Bob, has died in a plane crash just south of Albuquerque, New Mexico

April 9, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, seeking more information about what happened to her brother, and trying to determine if she can return to her family in Iowa

April 15, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, indicating what she did the morning of her brother Bob's funeral, and how she hopes to soon have a place of her own for her family in Pennsylvania

Episode 46: Too Hard to Cover Their Sorrow


 

April 17, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, noting that she has written to Florence, and mentions her other siblings.  She then notes that they are hoping for a house.

April 22, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, Chester Demaree, M.D. and Laura, commenting on what she is hoping for (and providing a diagram of the house she wants to get), and also notes some updates about her son, Lewis, who is about 7 months old at this point

May 1, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne​, noting her concerns about their parents, and notes that Jeanne may be starting a new job in Des Moines soon

Episode 47: On the Verge of Leaving




 

April 24, 1946: Sweetie writes to Laura, Chester Demaree, M.D. and Jeanne with her hopes for a house and describes some purchases she has made to prepare for a new home.  She also indicates that her son, Lewis, is not feeling well 

​May 27, 1946: Sweetie writes to Laura and Chester Demaree, M.D., and notes that she has met the parents of the WAVE who was one of the crew on the plane that crashed (the same plane crash which had resulted in the death of her brother, Bob)

May 27, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne a letter that she hides from Lew, indicating that she cannot stay at Collingdale much longer if things do not improve

May 31, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about Memorial Day weekend in 1946, noting that the house the family was hoping to get has gone to someone else.  While she is quite depressed, she clings to hope that her situation still might improve.  Lew, in the hopes of helping her, obtains a typewriter for her to use for her letters.

Episode 48: I Took My Foot in My Hand




 

June 24, 1946: Chester Demaree, M.D. writes to Jeanne, noting that he has received word that Sweetie has a new home in Pennsylvania

late June 1946: Sweetie writes to Laura and Chester Demaree, M.D. about moving to her new home at 37 S. Love Lane in Norwood, Pennsylvania, and notes that her son, Lewis, is sick

July 10, 1946: Chester Demaree, M.D. writes to Sweetie, providing updates on his work on his farm and about family having visited recently.  He provides some advice on how she might visit them in Iowa in the fall.

July 22, 1946: Sweetie to writes to family with more information about the house, another concern regarding Lewis, and how her radio is not working well

Episode 49: This Little Graham Cracker Crumb of Ours

 

July 25, 1946: Sweetie writes to family about the people in her neighborhood, but does become friends with one of them and we also learn more about some of Sweetie's cousins on the Demaree side

July 30, 1946: Sweetie writes to family about Lewis' progress and figures out that there are many mosquitoes near her home due to a creek nearby, and also notes that Lew is now working in a machine shop for the Navy

August 9, 1946: Sweetie writes to family about Lew's work for the Navy and provides more updates on Lewis

August 16, 1946: Sweetie to writes family of her happiness to hear wonderful family news from Iowa, and concludes her letter with the news that she and Lew have bought a car for the first time

August 19, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne​ with an update on Lewis that Jeanne is to keep secret until she visits her family in Iowa

Episode 50: The Highlight of the Entire Trip

 

November 23, 1946: Sweetie writes to Jeanne regarding a few basic updates, and indicates that she has returned from a trip 

November 24, 1946: Sweetie writes to family a big letter in which she reviews the road trip home to Pennsylvania that she took with Lew and Lewis, describes the Pennsylvania Turnpike in great detail, and discusses her activities at home right before Thanksgiving 1946

Episode 51: Trying to Decide About Christmas




 

December 1, 1946: Sweetie writes to family about birthday presents that she received the previous month, mentions the famous journalist Gordon Gammack from Iowa, and recounts Thanksgiving 1946 with the Graham family.

December 20, 1946: Sweetie writes to her family about her preparations for Christmas, some parenting concerns, and about her and Lewis attending their neighbor's son's first birthday party.

February 17, 1947: Sweetie writes to family indicating that Lewis has been sick, and what she has done to help him get better

April 5, 1947: Sweetie writes to family that Lewis has been sick again, general healthcare at that time (including some personal matters she is looking into), and we get a description of early spring in Norwood, PA.

Episode 54: Mamma Hang-On-To-Me-The-Nurses-Might-Be-Lookin'




 

April 11, 1947: Sweetie writes to family indicating that Lewis has become very sick, and he has to stay overnight at the US Naval Hospital in Philadelphia

April 18, 1947: Sweetie writes to family with an update on Lewis, including a recount of his stay at the Naval Hospital as well as the medicine that she gives him to help him get better

Episode 55: The Honeymoon 




 

August 11, 1947: Sweetie writes to her family (and catches up on three months of content) about her honeymoon that she takes with Lew (four years after they were married during the War) to Niagara Falls and some other locations in Canada. Sweetie also starts to make plans for the fall of 1947.

Episode 56: It Was Christened Mamma's Nice



 

September 29, 1947: Sweetie writes to her family about the month that passed between this letter and her previous letter, noting that the family has been sick and her typewriter was broken, but indicates the family is feeling better and indicates that they celebrated her son, Lewis', second birthday.

November 5, 1947: Sweetie writes to her family with a number of updates, but especially that after 16 months, she finally has her sewing machine.

Episode 57: She's Expecting a Ring for Christmas



 

November 5, 1947: Sweetie writes to Jeanne to counsel her on a question of whether or not Jeanne should get engaged to a man named Clifford

November 6, 1947: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, continuing with her thoughts on Jeanne's relationship with Clifford, and shares insights about her own life and her marriage to Lew

December 1, 1947: Sweetie writes to Jeanne on the same subject (relationship advice), and then notes at the end that while it is expected that her sister-in-law, Elizabeth will get engaged, Elizabeth may not be satisfied with the value of the engagement ring she might receive

Episode 58: Worry Worry Worry




 

December 9, 1947: Sweetie writes to family about how her son, Lewis, was sick during Thanksgiving, provides an update about her plans for Christmas, and notes that her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, is still expecting a diamond engagement ring for Christmas.

​

In this episode, we also review at the end the beginning of the Cold War and the start of the Truman Doctrine.

January 7, 1948: Sweetie writes to family regarding what happened during Christmas 1947, and provides her family with the update that her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, has become engaged to a man named Bob Brown

January 21, 1948: Sweetie writes to family about her daily home life in Norwood, Pennsylvania with her son, Lewis, who is two years old

Episode 60: I'll Jump Right Into the Trouble



 

February 8, 1948: Sweetie writes to family regarding her son, Lewis, becoming sick with pneumonia

February 9, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne to provide an update on her son, Lewis, who is being treated for pneumonia at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia

February 13, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne to provide the family with an update that her son Lewis is almost recovered from being sick

March 20, 1948: Sweetie writes to Laura and Chester Demaree, M.D. regarding her family's plans to move back to Iowa and we also see an added note from Chester indicating he will be visiting Jeanne in Des Moines

May 13, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne regarding her plans to move to Lacona, Iowa, but she is uncertain as to exactly when that will occur.

​

In this episode, we also review photographs from Elizabeth's wedding (Lew's sister), who was married on June 19, 1948.

Episode 61: Take Care of My Family For Me




 

July 19, 1948: Sweetie writes to Laura and Chester Demaree, M.D. about her preparations for moving to Lacona, Iowa and asks for their assistance with their furniture delivery

July 23, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about her plans to arrive in Iowa with her family; she notes that they are expected to start the trip in about a week

July 24, 1948: Dr. Chester Demaree, M.D. writes to Jeanne, noting that Sweetie, Lew, and Lewis are expected in Lacona soon

August 11, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne by way of her father to thank her for helping with the fee to move their furniture

September 13, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about her work repairing things and fixing other things at her new home in Lacona and about some work at her father's farm

November 15, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne to ask some advice about how to administer a vaccine to one of her father's patients

November 15, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne for some advice on how to help another of her father's patients who needs help

November 22, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, indicating that her father and mother are away visiting family in Indiana

December 11, 1948: Lew sends a postcard to Jeanne from western Pennsylvania, indicating that he is on his way back to the Philadelphia area

December 15, 1948: Sweetie writes to Jeanne that she feels lonely in Lacona, and notes that Lew has returned home to "get on the boats" for some work, but does not specify why he is doing so.  However, she makes reference to the Sun Oil Company.

​

This episode also features about twenty minutes of content reviewing photos from the fall of 1948 that were taken of their home and Dr. Demaree's farm in Lacona, Iowa.  They are the only known photos to survive of the Demaree farm.

Episode 62: SS Atlantic Transporter




 

This is Part I of III of a special trilogy of episodes featuring Lew's time in the United States Merchant Marine in 1949.

 

December 28, 1948: Lew writes to Sweetie after having joined the US Merchant Marine from the SS Atlantic Transporter, within the first week that they leave Philadelphia

January 3, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie about what it is like onboard the oil tanker while it is sailing across the Atlantic Ocean towards Europe

January 9, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie indicating that the ship has passed the Strait of Gibraltar, and that they have also passed the coast of Algeria.  The ship's next destination is Port Said, Egypt, where Lew hopes to receive word from Sweetie on what is occurring in Iowa.

Episode 63: To The Sweetest Girl in the World



 

This is Part II of III of a special trilogy of episodes featuring Lew's time in the United States Merchant Marine in 1949.

​

January 10, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie that his ship is passing south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea and is heading toward Port Said, Egypt

January 12, 1949: Lew writes to Jeanne indicating that the ship is about to go by Port Said, Egypt

January 14, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie that at Port Said, Egypt, the men on the ship began trading with the locals who came aboard with their wares.  He then describes going through the Suez Canal and the ship continuing through the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf, with its final destination being Fahaheel, Kuwait.

February 6, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie indicating that the ship is returning the way it came and is going through the Suez Canal again, after having filled up the tank with oil in Kuwait

February 1949: Lew sends a postcard to Jeanne indicating that the ship is headed back towards Philadelphia, but has yet to cross the Atlantic Ocean

February 14, 1949: Lew sends a Valentine's Day telegraph to Sweetie

Episode 64: I Love You With All My Heart



 

This is Part III of III of a special trilogy of episodes featuring Lew's time in the United States Merchant Marine in winter 1949.

​

March 10, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie indicating that the Atlantic Transporter is now at Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela for oil

March 22, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie, asking for her assistance to get some paperwork together as he plans to rejoin the US Navy

March 29, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie of plans for their new home near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

April 11, 1949: Lew writes to Jeanne indicating that the ship is currently docked in Port Aransas, Texas

April 30, 1949: Lew writes to Jeanne showing how close their relationship has become over the years, and he recommends that Jeanne explore a new job opportunity in Shenandoah, Iowa

May 5, 1949: Lew writes to Jeanne noting that the ship is docket in Port Arthur, Texas

May 13, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne from Iowa, and notes that she is planning to return to the East Coast

May 14, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie, indicating that he is still on the SS Atlantic Transporter, and notes some plans for when they will reunite in Pennsylvania

July 14, 1949: Lew writes to Sweetie about when the ship will dock in Philadelphia and inquires about her trip back to Pennsylvania

July 15, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about her trip with Lewis from Iowa to Pennsylvania

July 18, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne and notes that she and Lew are looking for a house near NAS Willow Grove

July 22, 1949: Laura writes to Jeanne regarding some of her daily work and states that she misses having Sweetie and Lewis around

July 23, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne and tells her that she and Lew have found a house to buy near NAS Willow Grove, but it will cost them about $10,000, and it is not clear if they will succeed in purchasing it

August 23, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne and indicates that she is waiting for the arrival of the rest of her things from Iowa on the Kessell Truck, notes that Elizabeth and her family, as well as Sidney, are headed to the New Jersey shore on Labor Day weekend, and that Lew has been assigned to a Navy cruise for about a week in Norfolk, VA

August 26, 1949: Sweetie writes to her family about some new rugs she has purchased and about the new house

August 30, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne and hopes that Jeanne will come visit her in Pennsylvania

August 30, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, Laura, and Chester that she is still waiting for the Kessell Truck, and has agreed to watch Elizabeth's dog while Elizabeth is away at the shore

September 2, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne and notes that the Kessell Truck has not arrived yet, and Lew's Navy cruise is now for 10 days at Atlantic City

September 3, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne that the Kessell Truck hasn't arrived and that Sidney left for the New Jersey Shore that morning

September 7, 1949: Sidney sends a postcard to Jeanne from Ocean City and writes about the ocean waves

September 18, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne that the Kessell Truck finally arrived and that she and Lew made settlement on the new house.

October 24, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about being so busy planting her new garden

October 28, 1949: Sweetie writes to her family about her gardening on the property, and about the farmer, on whose land her house had been built, and the great work he did for her family to prepare the land on the property for the family

Episode 71: Determination and Cussedness





 

November 13, 1949: Chester Demaree, M.D. writes to Sweetie about his gardening in Lacona, the work he is doing as the town doctor in the harvest season there, and about studying engineering.

November 28, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, thanking her for the birthday gifts she has received and sends birthday wishes to Jeanne for her birthday, but then reveals that she is keeping a secret from her husband, Lew, about what she knows is going on in Lacona, and she is especially concerned about Chester, who we learn is self-medicating with morphine after his heart attack and that he has not disclosed this issue to the Narcotics Board in Iowa.

November 28, 1949: Sweetie writes to family about her preparations for Christmas 1949, and tells the story of when Lewis met Santa Claus for the first time at Gimbels in Philadelphia

December 2, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne noting that she is lonesome without her family, despite a visit from her friends, the Ruski family

December 6, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne, concerned about their mother's health, and asks Jeanne if she should return to Iowa to help take care of her

December 20, 1949: Sweetie writes to Jeanne about sending some Christmas gifts, and indicates that Lewis has the flu

January 12, 1950 - Sweetie writes to Jeanne, and reveals that her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, is pregnant with her second child

January 19, 1950 - Sweetie writes to Jeanne, concerned that Jeanne has not written to her for a while

January 21, 1950 - Sweetie writes to Jeanne and plans to return some clothes her sister had loaned to her
