Samuel Graham, Sr. was Lew's father.  He was the son of William Graham (1834-1917) and Eliza McBride (1834-1906), who both immigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia in the mid-19th century (though it should be noted their ancestry was descended from the famous Graham clan from Scotland - so the family is really of Scottish descent).  Samuel was an engraver of fine jewelry at the famous company Bailey, Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia.  He was known as "Pop" to his family.

Samuel had no middle name, however, as an engraver, he chose to engrave his own initials as "SSG," duplicating the initial of his first name.  An example of his engraving work featuring this in metal survives as an example.

Samuel Graham, Sr. suffered from a decline in health by late 1944, and struggled with his health throughout 1945.  He passed away about a week after hearing the news about his first grandchild, his grandson, Lewis Sidney Graham, Jr.
